Sarawak is a State that is multicultural yet socially harmonious, politically stable yet vigorously democratic, steeped in ancient traditions yet poised on the cutting edge of technology. We have published this book for one simple reason; to tell you all about us, and to invite you to come and share in our future, whether you are a tourist, an expatriate, a business visitor or a potential investment partner. Whatever your purpose in visiting us, you will be warmly welcomed according to the finest traditions of Sarawak hospitality.
The Sarawak you see today would not exist without the efforts and sacrifices of many very dedicated people. Therefore I would like to convey my sincerest thanks to my predecessor, TYT Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, whose 32 years of selfless service and visionary leadership as Chief Minister has enabled Sarawak to become the vibrant, progressive and fast-developing state depicted within the pages of this book. I look forward to his continued contribution and wise guidance as Governor of Sarawak.
I would also like to thank everyone else involved in our remarkable success story: my colleagues in the Federal and State Governments; the Federal and State Civil Services; the various voluntary organizations and NGOs; the private sector; and of course the people of Sarawak, without whose goodwill and unfailing support the task of developing our state would have been impossible.
