SHOPPING - FOREWORD
It is hardly surprising that shopping should be a major feature of any visit to Sarawak. Historical research shows that trade has been on-going with China for centuries. Nowadays with modern transportation connectivity, Sarawak offers shoppers a full range of quality modern day products such as designer clothing and accessories, alongside local crafts and ancient antiques and art pieces.
We have a vibrant local fashion sector with a number of established designers of international repute, as well as up-and-coming designers. It is worth noting that some of the designer fashions and accessories on sale have a unique Sarawak flair to them, incorporating elements of batik, Sarawak Songket and even Pua-Kumbu.
In recent years the State Government has facilitated the development of modern shopping malls in the major towns and cities, and at the same time encouraged and supported local handicrafts and agro products. The result is visible today in a unique and fulfilling shopping experience for locals and tourists from near and far.
The Sarawak shopping experience is not confined to luxury imported goods and traditional handicrafts. The government has also invested in upgrading traditional wet markets and street markets throughout the state so visitors and residents can enjoy a traditional shopping experience in a clean and hygienic environment. At the same time local supermarkets are stocking more imported foodstuffs to cater to the growing demand from locals, visitors and expatriates.
Whether shopping for birds nest, batik, binoculars, Swiss watches, antiquities or designer jeans, you will find quality products, attractive bargains and always service with a smile.
