Antiques, Handicrafts & Souvenirs
The centre of Kuching’s antique and handicraft trade is the Main Bazaar Area
(see page 128), where some of Sarawak’s best-known tattoo studios can also be found. Nearby India Street
is the place to go for textiles and gold jewellery, and the parallel Gambier Street offers spice dealers and local foodstuffs.
Outside Kuching, there
are a number of handicraft shops adjacent to Serian Market, and some of the general stores at Lacahu Bazaar (near Sri Aman) also sell craft items.
A few shops in Sibu’s Old Town also sell handicrafts.
In Miri, the Handicraft Centre (corner Jalan Brooke/Jalan Merbau), is a good place
for beadwork and painting, and there are a few antique/ souvenir shops in the adjacent Jalan Yu Seng and the Saberkas Commercial Centre (Pujut Corner) Sarawak’s many markets also offer fertile ground for bargain hunters (see below).
