Night & Open Markets
KUCHING DIVISION
The vast new Satok Market in Petra Jaya is the largest open market in Malaysia.
It houses a wet market,
a wholesale market and Kuching’s famous Weekend Market (Saturday 2pm to Sunday midday), offering all kinds of foodstuffs, jungle produce and souvenirs. Serikin Weekend Market (Kampung Serikin Jagoi, Bau, 1 hour from Kuching, Saturday & Sunday daytime) is a bustling border market where mostly Indonesian traders offer bargain textiles, handicrafts and household goods.
SAMARAHAN DIVISION
Serian’s bustling market, 50km from Kuching, always offers a colourful selection of exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, as well
as fine basket-ware and bamboo handicrafts. Open: Daily, 8am~7pm
Cut-price clothing and footwear attract the shoppers at Limbang Market. Many Bruneians cross the border regularly in search of bargains.
SIBU DIVISION
Market lovers are spoilt
for choice in Sibu. The splendid Central Market (daily, 5am~6pm) offers
a huge choice of exotic foodstuffs, jungle produce, souvenirs and handicrafts, as does the adjacent Pasar Tamu (native market). The Night Market in Jalan Cross (daily, 6am~11pm) focuses on household goods and excellent food stalls.
KAPIT DIVISION
The upriver town of Kapit offers two distinctive markets, the Teresang Market at the riverfront (wet market, night market, jungle produce and food stalls, daily from 6am) and the Gelanggang Kenyalang along Jalan Tiung Ung Hung (daily, 6am~6pm) which is noted for its handicrafts and its famous resident tattoo artist.
