THE GUIDE TO SARAWAK 245
Orangutan mother and baby at Semenggoh Nature Reserve. The high birthrate amongst the semi-wild Orangutan population is testament to the quality of their environment.
MATANG WILDLIFE CENTRE
(Kuching Division)
Directly adjacent to Kubah NP, Matang Wildlife Centre has taken over from Semenggoh as Sarawak’s main centre
for wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. It is
a halfway-house for wild animals that have been rescued from captivity, and a training centre
for young orangutans who are reintroduced to their natural rainforest environment and taught to survive in the wild. The
young trainees are fed twice daily, 9am~11am
and 2pm~4pm, so visitors can obtain a fascinating glimpse into the ongoing rehabilitation process. This is the ideal place to learn about Sarawak’s unique wildlife; other residents include sun bears, sambar deer, civet cats, bear
cats, estuarine crocodiles, hornbills, eagles, kites, and storks. The centre also offers interesting trekking trails, picnic spots, a natural swimming pool and some scenic waterfalls.
