Sarawak has its own professional civil service which is responsible for administering the state and implementing state government policy. The service has a long and distinguished history, having been formed during the 1840’s. It works in partnership with, but is largely independent of, the federal civil service, all of whose major departments also have branches in Sarawak.
The civil service is headed by the State Secretary, currently YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi bin Abdul Ghani, who also heads the Chief Minister’s Department. The Civil Service’s stated vision
“a world-class civil service” is well on its way to bring the culture of excellence, efficiency and
effectiveness in delivery of service to the people.
Sarawak’s civil service is particularly noteworthy
for being an early adopter of ICT, has been enthusiasti- cally and effectively imple- menting e-government since 1995, and is nowa- days regarded as the role model for other states and federal departments in using technology to improve services.
