PLACES OF SPECIAL INTEREST - FOREWORD
In ancient Sarawak, every place was a place of special interest. Traditional animistic beliefs described how every tree, rock and stream possessed a spirit that made it both unique and special. Nowadays, it is the creations of man that have become special; towns, cities, mosques, churches, temples, libraries and museums.
In this chapter the reader will find internationally renowned museums, welcoming upriver longhouses, colonial-style buildings, stunning modern architecture, elaborate temples and elegant mosques, amongst others. But there is far more to Sarawak than these world-famous attractions. Also listed are those places and things that make Sarawak unique; a quiet country graveyard recalling the tragic power of love; a busy weavers’ cooperative in a remote coastal village; a potter hard at work at his wheel; an abandoned Brooke-era fort full of ghosts and memories; and even a temple repainted to spare a crab’s life. It is these little places, tucked well away off the beaten track, that make Sarawak truly unique.
These hidden corners of Sarawak, and the less well-known attractions of its cities, provide valuable insights to Sarawak and help one to understand the state and its people. They also show what has inspired our artists and craftspeople, and illustrate why Sarawak has become such a popular location for film-makers in recent years.
We strongly recommend all visitors (and potential visitors) to Sarawak to read this chapter thoroughly, take to the roads and waterways, and seize the opportunity to explore our beautiful and fascinating state. They will not be disappointed - of that we are certain.
