Sarawak has a rich and fascinating history. A former dependency of Brunei, it was governed by the Brookes, a dynasty of White Rajahs founded by wealthy English adventurer James Brooke, for over 100 years until the Japanese occupation of World War II. It then became one of Britain’s last colonies in 1946 before achieving independence through the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

The state has enjoyed political stability and great progress under former Chief Minister Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud. The longest serving state leader in Malaysia, he celebrated 50 years in active politics in 2013 and was appointed the 7th Governor of Sarawak in March 2014.
