Built in 1864, Fort Alice is the second largest fort in Sarawak, highlighting its strategic location at the time. It is currently closed to visitors as it is awaiting restoration.

FORT ARUNDELL, LUBOK ANTU
Jalan Arundell, Lubok Antu, Betong
Dating from 1888, this
fort has been extensively modified and is now used as the Lubok Antu District Office. Visitors are welcome during office hours.

FORT CHARLES, KABONG
Built in 1878 and currently used as a community centre and childcare centre.
Not open to the public.
FORT LILY, BETONG
Jalan Patinggi Udin, Betong
One of the earliest forts, built in 1855 when Charles Brooke was still the Tuan Muda, it saw plenty of action during Iban warrior chieftan, Rentap’s famous rebellion. It is well preserved but is not currently in use.

FORT BROOKE
Nanga Meluan, Julau
Jalan Meluan, 24km from Julau, Sarikei.
This tiny fort was originally built just outside Sibu in 1864, then dismantled and moved to Julau after a tax rebellion by local Ibans in
1935. It is currently empty but in good repair. A plaque outside describes its history. Maradong District Council T (084) 693 288
FORT EMMA, KANOWIT
Jalan Kubu, Kanowit
Built in 1859 and named
for Charles Brooke’s sister, Fort Emma was the site of the last serious challenge
to Brooke rule, with the murders of Charles Fox
and Henry Steele, which eventually led to the annexation of Mukah from Brunei. The fort is now used as a community hall.

FORT BURDETT
Jalan Kubu, Mukah
Built in 1861, this wooden fort now houses the Mukah offices of the Ministry
of Rural and Regional Development (KEMAS). Visitors are welcome by appointment.

FORT SYLVIA, KAPIT
Jalan Rajang, Kapit
Dating from 1880, the former Fort Kapit was renamed for the 2nd Ranee of Sarawak. It is home to a mini-museum
and handicrafts centre managed by the Tun Jugah Foundation.

Built in 1898, this wooden fort is nowadays put to excellent use as the Baram Regional Museum (See page 156).

This carefully restored wooden building, dating from 1897, houses the Limbang Regional Museum (See page 156).
