Bario
The sprawling highland village of Bario in Miri Division is the gateway
to the Kelabit Highlands, home of the Kelabit people, and is famed for the unique and fully organic Bario rice grown here, as well as the nearby natural salt springs. The area is also rich in culture and wildlife. Bario is accessible only by air (see page 402) or on foot from Ba’Kelalan (see below). Visitors stay in locally run homestays which can be booked via the eBario website.

Ba’Kelalan
Just a few kilometres from Bario and sharing a similar highland climate, Ba’Kelalan in Limbang Division is a cluster of nine villages
and the home of the Lun Bawang people, who also grow Bario rice, as well
as sweet pineapples and temperate fruits such as apples, and produce artisan salt from natural saline wells. The area is accessible by 4WD or by air (see page 403). Homestays can be arranged through the Sarawak Tourism Ministry’s homestay website. www.rightsarawak.com/ homestay
