Bintulu Port is one of
the most modern and efficient multi-purpose ports in Southeast Asia. It commenced operation in January 1983 and a handles variety of general cargoes, containerized cargoes, palm oil products, liquid
and dry bulk cargoes. Today, it is East Malaysia’s largest container port and the first in East Malaysia
to have a direct MLO connection to Far East ports (through Evergreen Marine Cooperation). The port’s total capacity is 60 million tonnes of cargo per annum.
Located midway between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, with a natural deep sea harbour, Bintulu Port is the import and export gateway for Sarawak, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines and the East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) region. It is the nation’s sole liquefied natural gas (LNG) export gateway and it is currently the 2nd largest
LNG export terminal in the world after Qatar Gas.
In 2012, Bintulu Port handled 41.12 million tonnes of cargo with LNG (23.52 million tonnes), crude
oil (3.39 million tonnes), and containerized cargo (3.85 million tonnes) making up the bulk of cargo. Cargo generated from the surrounding area is expected to increase
as the Sarawak Corridor
for Renewable Energy (SCORE) initiatives
are implemented, with additional shipments
of aluminium, pulp and paper, silicon, manganese, fertilizer, downstream timber, and agro produce & products making their way to the port.
