THE GUIDE TO SARAWAK
89
The Geikies, a typical Sarawak Eurasian family of the late Colonial Era.
Clarke, Cooke, Cox, Crocker, de Rozario, Douglas,
Drury, Geikie, Harry, Hendroff, Howell, Jacques, MacPherson, Marjoribanks, Mansel, Marshall, Owen, Parker, Read, Reutens, Rozario, Speldewinde, Swyney, White, Wright and Zehnder - are now into their 4th or even 5th generations. Eurasian assimilation into local society has run full circle, as the membership of the vibrant Sarawak Eurasian Association attests. In fact the Association can take
great pride in scoring a major first for Sarawak. Their self-researched and self-published Sarawak
Eurasian Association Legacy Cookbook (see also page 223) was judged the Best Local Cuisine Cookbook
in the World at the 2011 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Paris, beating
off over 8,000 rivals from 162 countries. The book is a must-read for its recipes and also contains valuable insights into the history and culture of Sarawakâs Eurasian community.
