Others still continue
their hardy existence
in the coastal areas as fishermen and farmers, while other rural dwellers have developed a notable talent for craft-based cottage industries, especially food-
based and decorative items. This innate creativity has also expressed itself in artistic endeavours; Malay are prominent in the fields of fashion, arts and crafts as well as literature, music, dance and film, with many
achieving international recognition and acclaim. The modern Malay has found his or her place in society, contributing a creative and adventurous spirit to the State’s immense talent pool.
       Sarawak’s Malays have a long and honourable history of business and trade with other nations and communities (see top photo on page 58) which continues to this day. A good example is their active participation in the Sarawak Bumiputera Chamber of Commerce (Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak or DUBS) whose executive council members are pictured here.
